feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Monday, 17-Jul-2023 05:12:50 JST feld Sometimes in descriptions of Web 2.0 you will find people emphasizing that "everyone should have a domain" was an original talking point. Does anyone remember more about this? -

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Monday, 17-Jul-2023 05:13:42 JST feld What was it like trying to buy a domain before 2000? I really don't remember, because I didn't know how that really worked yet. Were they more expensive? -

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Monday, 17-Jul-2023 05:16:55 JST feld What's the best "web 2.0" registrar you can think of? GoDaddy? Probably because they made it easy to make a shitty personal homepage for yourself or your business with their site builder?
Who else was a household name during that booming era? I'm coming up blank
Did they really undercut everyone else so much or just invest in marketing? -

And GoDaddy did invest that much in marketing. Several Super Bowl ads over the years, as I recall.

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Monday, 17-Jul-2023 05:20:52 JST feld Although Tucows must have existed back then -- since 1993 it seems. But were there sub-registrars operating off of Tucows or did that come later... -

Tim W (admin (and human)) (tim@union.place)'s status on Tuesday, 18-Jul-2023 05:35:22 JST Tim W (admin (and human)) @feld @drwho Tucows didn't become an ICANN-accredited domain registrar until 1999. Before that they were all about software distribution (and still were afterward, for a while).
Technically competition was allowed as of October 1998, but functionally 1999 is when ICANN actually started accrediting registrars.
