I've occasionally seen #Steam rattled off as an example of "enshittification"--it gets a mention in the blog post coining the term, alongside obvious examples like Google search and Amazon.

Has the Steam user experience deteriorated that much? Maybe I just haven't been playing as many games out of the Steam launcher lately, being focused on things like MTG Arena and heavily modded X-Com, but I haven't noticed a downward spiral. Hasn't e.g. the Steam Deck been a genuine/deserved success?

@kaliranya From the original blogpost right before mentioning Steam "This is enshittification: surpluses are first directed to users; then, once they're locked in, surpluses go to suppliers; then once they're locked in, the surplus is handed to shareholders and the platform becomes a useless pile of shit."

Steam Sales were new and insane, like 70% off on games that came out months ago. idk how it worked, maybe Valve ate the losses or maybe the publishers didn't care.
Sales aren't a big deal anymore; theres one now, its the same as the last one. The only cool thing Valve is doing is hardware, but Deck is just another way to use Steam. It doesn't enhance or expand the Steam experience. That's just default and expected.

The core difference here is Valve is not a public company. They have no shareholders. They can spend millions of dollars on a Left 4 Dead 3 and then scrap it and then put out a DOTA card game and then pretend it doesn't exist. No shareholder would allow EA or Activision to make something like Alyx.

@mrsaturday @kaliranya Alyx is worth playing and all AAA studios are like this. enshittification refers to storefronts and platforms, not the output decreasing. if anything, steam has helped the industry normalize indies, which do offer the frequent high quality and innovative games.

@kaliranya Name a Valve game worth playing that's come out in the last 10 years. It's absolutely enshittification.

@Nelenese @kaliranya vidya is in a bad spot, it accelerated too much without evolving in the 7th gen boom. anything with a AAAA budget won't be progressive, so it's on indies to recontextualize old "forgotten" designs.
idk if were coming out of it now; ubisoft is making a metroidlike and starfield is embracing the elder scrolls 1/2 procgen.

and on steam sales, yeah youre gonna be buying 10+ year old games. since games havent really progressed in 10 years, getting borderlands 2 for $0.05 is no big deal youve already made up your mind on that piece of shit.

@why @kaliranya some would argue that steam sales aren't as good as they were years ago even to now and could be seen as decline or valve being more greedy, but i wasn't on pc gaming around that time so i'm not sure.
i guess another reason is that the quality of video games weren't as good/fun as they were like 10 or 20 years ago. that also seems true but that's not really a fault of steam and more of vidya as a whole- but it can definitely be felt on steam.
