@abolisyonista @crimperman My point is that *every* sliver of difference between the neoliberal travesty of a Biden or a Starmer and a full-throated right-populist government tells disproportionately on the bodies of the most vulnerable. Every notch rightward multiplies the violence the vulnerable are exposed to. We owe it to them to hold the line with this simplest of acts, if we can, while we work for justice and dignity in the ways that really matter – IMO, anyway.

@crimperman @abolisyonista And I can offer a small but concrete, significant illustration of the difference: in the States, all during COVID, they had Trump idiotically ranting “Chyna virus, Chyna virus, Chyna virus”; here we had a murderously incompetent Tory government that did not, however, ever stoop to racializing the pandemic. In the States that hostility produced a wave of physical assaults on Asian people, women especially, where that has not been an issue here.

@crimperman @abolisyonista Yes. I think of it as harm reduction, and of choosing the terrain you want to struggle on. I’d one million times rather build community assemblies and mutual-aid structures against a Starmer or Biden backdrop than in the alternative.

@abolisyonista @ErevanDB @Ulrich_the_Elder sadly this (voting seeming to have little or no effect) is the case in a lot of places but that doesn't mean we shouldn't vote. Not voting is the only sure fire way to make sure your voice doesn't count. Voting may seem fruitless but it is one of the few options with a chance of being fruitful.
As Winston Churchill once said: democracy is the worst form of government ... until you consider the alternatives.

Which ones? Germany, where there was no real voting; China, a largely dictator run country with lots of suppression of info ; or one I haven't heard of?

The most common form of propaganda is making you think that voting doesn't matter. If it did not matter, voter suppression and gerrymandering would not exist. Vote in every election you can as if your life depended on it.

@abolisyonista I am not arguing voting is the only way to have any impact. It is and should be one of several measures we can take. The things you mention should and do make many of us very angry and voting alone is not the answer. In fact other actions have historically shown themselves to be more effective at times on some of these matters. But I would not discount voting altogether.

@visualcomposite @abolisyonista @ErevanDB @Ulrich_the_Elder That’s the attitude they’ve made sure you embrace. Godspeed in our new dictatorship if you keep on convincing others their vote is shite. 🤦🏻♀️

@abolisyonista @ErevanDB @Ulrich_the_Elder Agreed. The fact that Obama opened the detention centers, that they turned into death camps with COVID, that the 4th amendment doesn't apply within the 100 mile border zone was memory holed. I used to believe my vote mattered but fascism rising overrides that

@ErevanDB @abolisyonista @Ulrich_the_Elder ICE runs concentration camps in the US for undocumented immigrants. It was a big controversy during the Donald Trump term

@abolisyonista I read your bio and have a better grasp of your cynicism. In the U.S., the vote is critical to reform. Not myth, but wiring. We have made leaps in tolerance and inclusion, tho hatred and harm continues, Nationalism, Naziism and Christofascism rises. We are mired in this war to preserve our basic democratic values BECAUSE people quit voting. They quit voting BECAUSE they were conditioned to accept it as useless; propaganda convinced them they have no power. #Vote

@abolisyonista @Ulrich_the_Elder In Iowa 45% of registered voters didn't turn out to vote, in Florida 1.5 million people didn't turn out to vote, in the general election half the US population don't turn out to vote and it is even worse when it comes to midterms. Wisconsin is a prime example of people not turning out in the mid terms in 2010 resulted in a Republican majority who then used opportunity to redraw the electoral maps and thus cement a permanent Republican majority.
