@thollief @inthehands @misc @shauna an algorithm doesn’t *have* to be non-consensual.

This is a helpful framing. And it gets toward the heart of the issue: I don’t want an external actor profiling me in intimate detail and having control over what I hear and over who hears me — regardless of whether that’s automated or done by humans, regardless of whether they’re doing it by codified algorithm or just by vibes. -

Sure. I mean, on Mastodon, I’d certainly appreciate features like “pick a few items of likely interest that I missed while I was away” or “recommend some new follow based on what I’m boosting.” I like recommender systems! Per your OP, it’s all about consent and control — over both inputs and outputs — not about whether recommenders exist. -

Sören (chucker@norden.social)'s status on Monday, 26-Jun-2023 04:41:33 JST Sören @thollief @inthehands @misc @shauna It doesn’t have to be a binary of A “the timeline is exactly the people and hashtags you follow, nothing more, nothing less” or B “the timeline is what a corporation whose interests don’t align with yours has decided”, is my point.
I do prefer A, but it’s not for everyone and does come with the occasional “why am I even reading this” moment.

Sören (chucker@norden.social)'s status on Monday, 26-Jun-2023 04:41:34 JST Sören @thollief @inthehands @misc @shauna it can be things like
• you seem to enjoy reading posts tagged xyz a lot. [ Follow Hashtag] [ Don’t Ask Again ]
• you seem to skip over posts from chucker unless he talks about xyz. [ Show fewer posts from chucker ]
• you rarely read something chucker has boosted. [ Hide boosts from chucker ]It’s just some yellow bar at the top of the timeline, and you can shut it off.

The question I like to ask if "Does this creates systems of domination?" in the Foucault sense. Does it create relationships of power that are hard or impossible to change? That can happen with centralization or federation

Jesse Baer 🔥 (misc@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 26-Jun-2023 04:55:47 JST Jesse Baer 🔥 @chucker @thollief @inthehands @shauna I’m still confused when people are adamant that stuff like this has to be done at the server level and is necessarily a compromise against freedom from centralization and surveillance. Server-side may be more efficient, but who cares?
Paul Cantrell repeated this.
