    I have Thoughts(tm) about how the mid-to-late 20th century was an aberration in terms of infrastructure which will not be replicated, and how that is reflected in and caused by class and global exploitation, as well as regulation.

    Very briefly:
    * Cars bad
    * Mass car infra is only possible/desirable under very specific circumstances
    * This includes cheap cars
    * New regs to make cars safer and more sustainable also make them more expensive
    * Making cars luxuries again >

      There's, of course, a lot more that goes into this, but I think the confluence of systemic and "individual" factors that go into these changes.

      We got car culture because

      a) cars are genuinely useful and freeing on an individual level, especially in more rural locales

      b) rich people thus got cars and remade laws and infrastructure to yield to the restrictions and requirements of people with cars, not just in rural areas but everywhere.

      We are (occasionally, in different places) moving _away_ from cars, because

      a) a sustainable society cannot be built around cars and that's just getting more and more undeniable

      b) rich people are confident they will be able to keep _their_ cars, by pricing out everyone else and leaving the now oversized infrastructure available for their exclusive use

      I dunno. We'll see how it goes in the end.

      @sa0bse Is it mostly about costs, for you?

      @pettter Just the other week I was driving home from a place and had a friend (that doesn't have a license) with me and he started talking about getting a license and a car...

      And I was like... dude... you don't want a car... trust me on this.

      So I asked about asking if he had the use for it on a daily basis to do his job or other tasks. The answer was no.

      So I started listing all the costs for me owning a car.

      He didn't seem as interested after that 😀

      @pettter I really don't like that I have a car... It's expensive to have it and I don't use it much. However, when I use it I use it because there's no alternative. There's no train or bus going to the place I need to get.

      If there were a car pool in the city I live I would join right away, however, there's none... and I really wish there were... and I don't want to run one myself...
