      The main thing I'm trying to figure out is whether I need to create an account at fedia.io, or whether my indieweb.io mastodon account will allow me to do what I need (join communities/magazines, originate threads, read and comment)

      I will probably end up creating a fedia.io account at this point; I can always delete it later.

      @nonlinear@mastodon.com.br
      @emc2@indieweb.social Apologies but I'm not following you. You signup to whichever instance you want to use. After that, I no longer have an idea what you said.

      I mean, I did not say you should have multiple accounts. But if that's what you want, you can do it. Or, if you like to test things, do it.

      @emc2 @youronlyone that's so confusing.

      For users, a sign up means sign up to service in front of them. Of course.

      Reducers e already has this (good) thing of signups goes to different places.

      But now you're saying you an have both, sometimes? That's a hell of a usability problem. No wonder people are confused.

      If you have key to a door, it should annouce other doors it opens too.

      So then in theory, I should be able to start threads in, say, the m/tech community on kbin.social with my current indeweb.social account? I just need to use a different UI?

      1. Yes, those are separate accounts per instance.

      2. Also yes, you can use one account from one instance to create a “Thread” in a community/magazine/group located in another instance. Or, reply to an existing one located in another instance.

      However, there are still some cases wherein a new “Thread” or reply, does not federate well in another instance. It could be software related or instance configuration. (Or, defederation.) But works fine in non-Lemmy / non-Kbin instances.

      3. Yes, similar to #2, you can use a Calckey, Hubzilla, Friendica, Akkoma, Mastodon. The “Threads” will appear as a user's post.

      Also similar to #2, federation hiccups can be software related, server configuration, or admin defederation setting. Or, there are just too many requests, it is taking time to defederate properly.

      You don't need a separate account like what I have, unless you want to test and/or use the “Thread” UI and UX Lemmy and Kbin offers.

      ^_^

      Are these all separate accounts, or is it possible to post using a single account?

      As to that, is it possible to post somewhere using an existing FediVerse account? (I doubt it, but I'm still figuring this out)

      @nonlinear@mastodon.com.br @emc2@indieweb.social

      Yep. You can try searching my accounts from any other fediverse instances:
      - @youronlyone@readit.buzz
      - @youronlyone@fedia.io
      - @youronlyone@u.fail

      Or, try a kbin magazine/community/subreddit/group:
      - @test@fedia.io
      - @readitbuzz@readit.buzz

      Hope it helps!

      fedia.io looks like it might be a bit more focused on tech + leftism?

      readit.buzz looks pretty small.

      kbin.social looks like it's mirroring a lot of reddit's communities. It looks more or less like the baseline, and I'd guess is probably the biggest.

      I see a pretty good mix of things there, no overall theme (aside from what one tends to see in the fediverse broadly speaking).

      Live-posting as I figure this out. Feel free to reply with suggestions. #kbin #RedditMigration

      Looks like "subreddits" are called "magazines" and are hosted on specific instances. Beyond that, instances look like they work pretty much the same as on Mastodon.

      I'm guessing looking at the magazines an instance hosts is a good way to learn about that instance.
