I went into an indoor meeting around 11am, came outside again at 3pm and it was like I’d walked into a post-apocalyptic horror movie.

AQI like this, you can see just looking across the danged street.

Grey, dim, shadowless. And then I realized it wasn’t even cloudy. There was the sun. You could see it, crisp and clear. You could look straight at it.

Because I am a nerd, I have an air quality monitor that uses an internal laser to count airborne particles. (It’s this one: http://dylosproducts.com/ornodcproair.html)

The two numbers are small (≤0.5µm) and large particles. We get a reading of 100-200 when our indoor air is in good shape, maybe 1000-2000 on a normal city-pollutiony day. The scale on the device lists >3000 as “very poor” air.

Check out the reading I got this evening.

FWIW, with a large HEPA filter running (~290 CADR in a ~1900 sqft house), our whole house is holding steady around ~5500-6000. Not great air — but also >6x better than outdoor.

      Over 6 •times• better!

TL;DR: Yes, those indoor air filters really do make a difference. Crank ‘em up!

The photos were unreal! Pretty sure you had it even worse than we do today, which is really saying something.

@inthehands this is like what we had last week in NY (we were up over 300!). It was so bizarre.

Hoping to, in fact! I have been meaning to get in touch. Plans are afoot. Perhaps several feet.

Shout out to the MN Aurora, who cancelled their game today to protect the health of the players: https://www.mnaurora.com/news/2023/06/14/game-cancellation-6-14-23/

That was a bummer, and it was the right thing to do.

Yes, there are athletic leagues that actually look out for their people.

Yeah. We had a few days like this last summer, but not nearly as frequently as you all have had. Looks like the whole continent is heading for this as a new normal though.

@inthehands I sympathize. As a West coast person I know what you're experiencing and it is an oppressive suckdom.

This is the HEPA filter brand we have too. Strong endorse (from @njeanneburns): https://mspsocial.net/@njeanneburns/110546047250530021

Pay attention to the CADR (clean air delivery rate) ratings on their products, and on all air purifiers. They have some little ones that are pretty, but not good for more than a small room. CADR, not “room size,” is the thing to look for.

@inthehands@hachyderm.io We strongly recommend Winix air purifiers. If you don't want to do the homemade thing. They're fantastic. We took one on our trip to Alberta (for Covid protection) and it turned out it was perfect for Alberta wildfire smoke. And now bad air in Minneapolis.
