@Suiseiseki @debian dont buy computer hardware that needs "malware" (firmware blobs) to boot, skill issue tbh 翠星石 likes this. -

@jeff Indeed, but even if you have a decent computer, the live image to download is still not free software, as it contains proprietary software, under proprietary licensing terms.
Sometimes, proprietary software can take your freedom even if it happens to not be executed. -

@dcc All hardware is proprietary by definition and GNU is a free software OS and movement, not a free hardware design movement.
A decent computer just works without you having to agree to any proprietary software licenses - end of story.
Manufacturers now seem to avoid making malicious circuitry, as that's physical evidence - it seems they've taken to putting the malware features into software instead. -

@dcc Yes, computing hardware is controlled by the physical limitations of requiring fabrication equipment and the rare raw materials required for construction, therefore, free hardware doesn't yet exist.
There are some free hardware designs available, but getting those manufactured results in the same problems as hardware made from nonfree designs.
Running free hardware designs on a FGPA is a middle ground, but FGP's that are fast and large enough to handle all the logic required for a general purpose computer aren't programmable with only free software. -

@jeff Even the most proprietary of GPUs will work on GNU/Linux-libre, with the side effect of no 3D acceleration and potentially non-native resolutions.
Get a decent Atheros 802.11n Wi-Fi card - those just work without requiring agreement to a proprietary software license and are reasonably fast too. -
