Those lawyers who claimed they used ChatGPT to draft a brief that had bogus citations are fucked. The judge is so pissed. Here's the latest.

@Humpleupagus Really seems weird that they would just trust chatgpt without double checking. I feel like it still would have saved them a lot of time otherwise...

The attorney is ultimately responsible for all representations he himself makes to the court, including law. Cite checking isn't just smart, it's a central component of the practice and the ethical obligations owed to the court. These guys knew what they were doing or they're so completely incompetent that they should have their licenses yanked.

He could get his license yanked or suspended if the bar gets involved. Chatgpt is fine I guess, but cite check that shit.

I mean. We don't read every word in every case, but you better make sure that westlaw, lexis nexus, or some authoritative guide cites it for the proposition argued (unless you really really read the case and are making a novel argument), and you better at least make sure it's a real fucking case. If the authority used for the proposition cited is secondary, you should at least read the relevant passage.

Lawyers in NY should start going through their cases looking for malpractice clients. This isn't the first time they did it. It's just the first time they got caught.
