    **Kyle Douglas "Kulas" Jennermann, a Canadian vlogger (“Becoming Filipino”), is now a Filipino Citizen!**

    It is not easy for foreigners to gain a Philippine citizenship. It take years: you can not leave the country for years, for example (unless an exemption is made). However, once you pass all the requirements, the last steps are to get the Lower House and the Senate to approve your application (which can take months), and the current President of the Philippines to sign it.

    In fact, as long as the Congress (Upper and Lower Houses) approves your application, it's a done deal. Even if the current President doesn't sign it (for example, too busy), once it expires it's automatically approved. The “signing period” is actually for the President to have a chance to review and veto it.

    (At least that's how I understood it. Things might have changed the past few years. I haven't updated myself on this subject.)

    Congratulations Kulas! You are now a natural Filipino!

      @jerome Yep!

      When I first learned of it, I was surprised too. I thought foreigners just weren't interested… I mean, after all, as far as benefits go, usually their native countries provide better support.

      But it turns out there are many foreigners who wants to become a Filipino citizen, it just is so hard and time consuming to be one.

      (Like that requirement to not leave the country for at least 5(?) years before they can start their application. And during the application process, they shouldn't leave the country still.)

      And yes, the final step, Congress approval. If they find just a little “dirt”, it can become an item for denial or the delay of their naturalization.

      Though, I think if one truly wants to become a Philippine citizen, it's worth it. One such is, they no longer have to pay the foreigner's fee of staying in the country annually (which is expensive), and all the annual requirements (like yearly NBI/police clearance). And the freedom to go outside the country again! Hehe.

      (Note: The process before reaching the Congress, might have changed, maybe it's easier than when I first read the documents about it years ago.)

      @youronlyone the fact he went through this made me realize how hard it was for anyone to go through that process. Had no idea you needed congress (!)

      @youronlyone there was some discussions on Reddit Philippines as well and it definitely still seems difficult. Also most countries make the process easier when you marry a citizen, which doesn’t seem to be the case, which I find surprising as well.

      Thanks for sharing!
