Xerz! :blobcathearttrans: (xerz@fedi.xerz.one)'s status on Saturday, 03-Jun-2023 02:51:45 JST Xerz! :blobcathearttrans: @atomicpoet 4 is pretty easy to check, right? Sadly I've went into the-federation.info and it doesn't seem like there's any significant difference when looking at users active last month? In conversation permalink Attachments

Chris Trottier (atomicpoet@calckey.social)'s status on Saturday, 03-Jun-2023 02:51:46 JST Chris Trottier Yes, there's slowdown in #Mastodon sign-ups. My conjecture for why it's happening:
1. #Bluesky became the hotness and sucked the oxygen out of the room
2. People are awaiting #Barcelona to see what #Meta has to offer
3. There hasn't been a big Mastodon release in a long, long time -- which dulls curiosity about the product
4. Growth of #ActivityPub has moved more towards *key apps (#Misskey, #Calckey, etc.)

Not a trustworthy source.

The Nexus of Privacy (nexusofprivacy@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 03-Jun-2023 14:41:38 JST The Nexus of Privacy Thanks! @kainoa!
It's hard to interpret FediDB's May numbers. At first it seems like Masto accounts are flat since May 1. But :
- both pawoo.net (856K accounts) and baraag.net (294K users) are on the Mastodon top server page in the 5/1 snapshot on archive.org https://web.archive.org/web/20230501121833/https://fedidb.org/software/mastodon
- Now, neither of them are.
So does that mean those 1.25M accounts were included in the 5/1 total but aren't included in the current total?

I can't be sure, but I think their stats are still counted despite not being visually listed due to those servers containing illegal content.

The Nexus of Privacy (nexusofprivacy@mastodon.social)'s status on Saturday, 03-Jun-2023 14:56:46 JST The Nexus of Privacy @kainoa Quite possibly so. I wonder if Gab and countersocial are also counted?
.social's accounts have only increased by about 75K since May 1 and since they're now the default they'd presumably account for most of the Mastodon increases in general -- and if various sites cleaned out spambots then I could certainly imagine total #s flat.

Chris Trottier (atomicpoet@calckey.social)'s status on Saturday, 03-Jun-2023 17:26:31 JST Chris Trottier What the May slowdown in #Mastodon sign-ups proves once and for all: making mastodon.social the default server does not grow Mastodon.
In fact, it may have hindered growth.
With Mastodon gGmbh now favouring their own server, other server admins are less motivated to provide horizontal scale for Mastodon.
Some of them, like home.social, might even be shutting down.In conversation permalink
