   What @gruber@mastodon.social clearly doesn’t understand about the Fediverse is that *I don’t have to interact with people or services that make me miserable*.
   
   Which I couldn’t do when I was using Facebook. I was at the mercy of their algorithm, hoping that I wouldn’t encounter something they dumped into my feed which would make me deeply unhappy.
   
   And yet he believes that choosing not to connect with #Barcelona makes you a “misfit island loser”.
   
   @gruber@mastodon.social believes that freedom of association is for losers.

     @atomicpoet @gruber Really the zealots is bluesky who feels they needed a different protocol to much that they are going to have to bootstrap all of their network effects and growth hack themselves to a user base.

     Barcelona will come online and the first person to join will have most of the fediverse to interact with.

     all he cares about is that, as per yoozh, he's with the in-crowd inside his little tent full of other specially-selected apple users -- aka willingly self-identifying proven marks.

     shitting on masto is just part of his schtick at this point.

     @atomicpoet Yet another reason why self-hosting is bliss. I'll be sitting on the sidelines (my own instance federating with Meta until they give me a reason not to), watching all of this unfold and play out.

     It's going to be interesting to see where the cards land. Will Meta be a good corporate citizen in order to maintain federation? Will defederated instances face user pressure to connect? Or will we have different island chains of federation out in the social sea?

     Interesting days ahead.

     I don’t want to fit into a dopamine trap of never ending plastic pretend, where winning is by definition at the expense of everyone else, and any ideals or sense of togetherness and goals are to be replaced by product placements, consumerism and ads to sell you shit you don’t need or do things you don’t want.

     *And* I’m perfectly fine with you wanting to torture yourself like that, as long as you don’t force it down my throat.
