I've seen many Kore-eda films, but until tonight never watched his debut Maborosi (幻の光, illusion of light, or trick of the light - the relevance of the title only becomes apparent right at the end of the film) .
It's utterly sad and utterly beautiful, and some of the scenes are both so understated but also so incredibly powerful that you'll remember them for a long time.

Jason Molenda (jasonmolenda@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 21-May-2023 08:15:56 JST Jason Molenda @mario It's one of my favorites of his. I haven't watched it in probably fifteen years but I can remember entire scenes and lines of dialogue perfectly. The scene where Yumiko encounters the funeral procession, I couldn't breathe it was so beautiful. Somehow this film and After Life (ワンダフルライフ) never made it to any streaming/VOD in the US. Criterion released After Life on Bluray/DVD, so you can still get it on physical media, but Maboroshi is real tough to find here. :(

マリオ (Mario Menti) (mario@neko.cat)'s status on Monday, 22-May-2023 04:15:37 JST マリオ (Mario Menti) @Mayobrot that's hard to as answer, I genuinely think most of his films are amazing. If I had to choose, I might pick the quite light hearted but easily the most life-affirming film I've ever seen, Our Little Sister (海街 diary). And After Life is a close second. But as I say, I don't think I've seen a Kore-eda film I didn't like so that's a tough qustion and probably mostly down to the kind of film that you like yourself....

Mayobrot 🇵🇸 (mayobrot@zirk.us)'s status on Monday, 22-May-2023 04:15:38 JST Mayobrot 🇵🇸 @mario I'm about to (re)watch Shoplifters today with some friends. I'm not really used "slower" films, but this one I really liked! I feel like I should maybe explore more of his films, would you say that this one is a good next film to watch?
