   Did you know you can use an animated GIF as your profile picture or profile header? As long as it's under 2 megabytes you can upload it just like any other profile image.

   GIFs may or may not play automatically for you, depending on your settings. You can set this by logging in through your server's website and going to Settings > Auto-play Animated GIFs

   ⚠️ Do not use rapidly flashing GIFs as these can be dangerous for people with certain neurological conditions such as photosensitive epilepsy.

     It seems this has been raised as an issue on the official Masto app's iOS, I'd :

     Weirdly, it's the other way round on the Android version:

     https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon-android/issues/541

     The ultimate problem seems to be the official Masto apps aren't fetching all their settings from the server.

     I wonder if there are third party apps which allow animations to be set automatically off or on?

     oh I hate gifs so much. I‘d love a setting that at least puts a CW on them automatically.

     I didn’t check that box in the settings but that doesn’t seem to transfer to the app on my phone, and I can‘t find an option to stop them from playing there.

     There's a general issue with all avatars and headers on Mastodon (both still and animated), which is that they don't have any descriptions. Their alt text is just the name of the account, and there's no way of editing it.

     One workaround is to describe them in your profile text, but that uses up a lot of your character limit. (On post attachments descriptions don't affect the character limit.)
