    > Discord is not a wiki.
    > Discord was never meant to be a wiki.
    > Discord as a product is not marketed as a wiki.
    > Discord is not designed to be used as a wiki.
    > Discord is a chat app and clearly has the UI and functionality of one. Stop using it as a wiki.

ok but if you use a real wiki, you're living on borrowed time until you get acquired by wikia/fandom and everything is splattered with video ads

@vana Presumably the code is *somewhere* and presumably that somewhere has simple project management and a wiki or otherwise there could be docs in the same repo as the code.

But then, everyone has their time budget, maybe just answering questions live is easier than keeping reference material up to date etc.

I get it, I do. I have a thing I worked on 5 years ago and last month someone had a question filed as an issue, and I answered I'd look at it and still haven't.

The point, just like with proper governance and other things, it's good to get the message out there that if people do have time and energy, if people want their work to be helpful, getting stuff out of chat and into reference material is a really really good investment that pays back in the chat too.

@clacke i figure wikis are just another casualty of "everybody else thinks their ux is fine, until discord comes for them", and while it makes less sense than for irc channels and teamspeak servers, managing a wiki seems like a fairly awful proposition for the discord target audience.

now of course when you already have a thing on github or w/e......

@clacke Yes. That isn't only true of #Discord, by the way. I used to see projects nearly devoid of documentation, but they'd push you to #IRC. And same for #Matrix or #XMPP MUCs.

I use IRC, but if I need info (a config setting, the setup process, etc) some questions recur and should be documented so they don't clog up the channel. Others occur so rarely that only one or two people know a fix. Those especially need to go into the documentation. Not just because of "truck factor", but because even those people can forget if there is a long enough time between the question recurring.

@lnxw48a1 Yes, the point isn't Discord specifically, although that has issues too, the point is using ephemeral and unstructured chat, unsearchable by its nature even when search exists, as if it were reference material.

I'm no saint, I have a feature at work documented in "that email I sent last June, here, I'll forward it to you again" that I should really put somewhere better.

      100% agree on:
      1) free the chat from FAQs, improve the chat
      2) document before you forget it

I have HPR episodes recorded by myself that I go back to because I forgot how to do a thing. 😃

@ketmorco No it hasn't, because Discord and Slack don't federate. 🤣

@ketmorco Yes, Slack is just as little a means of "documentation" as Discord, Matrix, IRC, XMPP, mail ... they're made for conversation, not structure and reference. A fallback at best, when real docs don't exist or are incomplete.
