   I'm a bit fatigued atm, so I haven't replied to a thread I'm in with some of the #calckey .social mods about moderation and safety tools, but here a snippet of what I did have prepared to say:So here's the rub, the fediverse will not let calckey.social get away with the same crap that they begrudgingly let mastodon.social get away with. You will be silenced and Fediblocked long before you get their leverage. But we're absolutely not at that stage. This is not anything near the whole Pleroma and Gleason thing. It's far, far, far, far from it and I'd hate to think that my public raising of concerns as a neighbour of calckey.social would lead to any platform-based defederations at this stage.
   
   It's real kick in the face to suggest that #Calckey devs and mods don't care about safety.
   Blahaj.zone is actively, not passively, moderated. Our front end admin @ada has decades of cross-platform moderation experience and she puts our safety first, while our backend admin @supakaity has been working to improve safety tools on our instance and many of the other enhancements we've enjoyed here have been PRd and merged into the main Calckey release. I will not stand silent while my friends are tarred as being part of an unresponsive or unconcerned platform, particularly when many of the issues are #fediverse issues-at-large

     @jo @supakaity @ada @kainoa @unattributed Adam F. Lawton is clearly speaking from a mastodon instance, and speaking from an experience he’s having on his Mastodon server.

     I have not even seen the egregious posts that he’s referring to on calckey.social, and if I did, I’d ban whoever did that.

     It's been pointed out to me that some of the confusion with what I'm posting is that we've been largely talking at cross purposes.
     
     I've been talking about proactive moderation things you could be doing, that are common across large parts of the fediverse - though now kind of given up on in some of largest instances since the birdsite culture takeover. You guys keep talking about reactive moderation and letting you know when I see things. I've not really had an issue with that.
     
     It isn't a case of you not responding to egregious rule breaking, but rather my perception that calckey.social, is replicating what I've seen is the new cultural norm on many general instances. It's the sub-par mastodon.social vibe.
     
     I'm railing against the kind of moderation style that non-black tech guys seem to favour, one that doesn't taking proactive steps to mitigate an environment that becomes passively hostile but rather waits till things are actively hostile. It's what folks have been pointing out about re Black Mastodon and why many are now supporting a Mastodon centralisation push for mod tools, third-party curated blocklists & patching up the workarounds that bigots use to target folks.
     
     Doesn't it seem kinda shit though that media spoilers require a content warning on calckey.social, but stuff that's painful for black or trans folk to be regularly bombarded with is like, "CWs? Meh, it's news"? 🤷♀️ @atomicpoet@mastodon.social And when @unattributed@calckey.social 's first interaction with me goes straight to "where do you draw the line", I realise that we won't find common ground soon.
     
     It sucks that queer and black instances are becoming increasingly siloed on the much championed "queer-built" fediverse, and our neighbours think these norms are all a bit over the top on our part.
     
     I've added some screenshots to fill out the vibe of what I'm arguing.

     @jo@blahaj.zone @ada@blahaj.zone @supakaity@blahaj.zone With all due respect, I believe you've misunderstood what our mod team laid out in that thread. We absolutely care about the safety of our users, and actively moderate our instance and immediately deal with reports. The specific situation you mentioned in your thread wasn't even posted about by any of our local users, nor did we receive any reports of offending content. Our TOS specifically outlines no homophobia and no transphobia, and we stand by that in our moderation policies. I hope that your perception that we lack active moderation was nothing more than miscommunication.

     Speaking as a Jew, watching that happen was one of the scariest situations I’ve ever seen in my life.

     I don’t want that behind a CW because that allows people to ignore the threat of Fascism.

     Your marginalized experience is not more important than mine.

     @jo @supakaity @ada @kainoa @unattributed I’m sad that you found that experience overwhelming and traumatizing.

     However, I’m not approaching this situation from a laissez-faire perspective of a “tech bro”.

     I approach this as someone with friends and family who were (and are) directly affected by all the shenanigans that Tucker Carlson enabled.

     Some news shouldn’t be buried behind a CW.

     @atomicpoet@mastodon.social And as I said before to you, I'm not asking marginalised folk to CW - though it does happen regularly that trans folks ask other trans folk to stick the news behind a CW after there's been a deluge of genocide posts that become overwhelming. Some do some don't from that point, but it cuts down the barage of posts nonetheless. But, if you're none of the marginalised groups and you're all boosting and putting your spin on the news, then sorry stick it behind a CW. Even the schadenfreude was overwhelming.
