People in the US sure are bizarrely obsessed with royalty given how this whole nation-state’s founding premise was “monarchies are bad, actually.”

And — upping the ante even further — the destructiveness of it, the way people delight in showering riches on public figures while destroying their interior lives and stripping them of their humanity, the way people get obsessed with reality TV whose central features are humiliation and cruelty…all of that is not quite as far from ritual human sacrifice as we’d like to think.

The Disney obsession with royalty, its elevation of royalty, the fundamental assumption that royalty is benign underlying so many Disney plots…that I do not get.
