I don't think it's wrong for other Fediverse projects, besides Mastodon, to exist.
Especially since so many of them predate Mastodon.
#Misskey, which is what #Calckey is based off, predates Mastodon by two years!
Friendica started in 2010.
GNU Social is even older.
And people forget that Mastodon itself is a fork!
It's wild to me that so many folks believe Mastodon = Fediverse.

I'm like a broken record at this point.
I keep saying the same thing because some random guy who's never read my posts before is like, "I don't think it right for other Fediverse projects to exist. That causes bifurcation that hurts adoption of the Fediverse."
The whole point of ActivityPub is interoperability.
Without purposeful interoperability, Mastodon is just Diaspora all over again.
What's Diaspora? Exactly!

@strangefreeworld Diaspora has no traction because they refused to interop with other apps.
Mastodon interops with other apps, that's why it's replaced Diaspora as the leading Fediverse platform.

People are really looking at the Fediverse with Western eyes and aren't considering the fact that in Japan, #Misskey is many peoples' first exposure to the Fediverse.
#Calckey is building on what Misskey has already made. But really, Calckey is exposing the West to the world of *key apps.

There's probably some guy in Japan who's currently thinking, "What's Mastodon? Looks like a rip-off of Misskey. Those people should stop the bifurcation of the Fediverse and start adopting Misskey."
And you know what? I wouldn't blame him!
For many people the *key apps are the Fediverse!

Even if Mastodon itself was steered by a committee and not just one person, I would think the same thing

@atomicpoet That's some Highlander-esque zero-sum thinking from Random Guy! Too much Platform Thinking, and not enough looking-ahead Protocol Thinking.
What gets me excited about all of this are not the Mastodons, *keys, Pixelfeds, etc., but instead the idea of augmenting existing sites with ActivityPub - such as my own @freshcomics - so that when I put new releases up, that release data shows up on the feeds of folks subscribed to the hash tag for a series or a favorite creator.

In particular, the *key apps.
How are the *key apps "wrong"?

@atomicpoet I'm rather a novice at all of this, and that actually makes pretty good sense to me if the goal is to let people communicate using whatever platform works the way they like best.
I'm sure there's tons of nuance I'm missing, but on a basic level that just sounds like a cool and admirable thing to me, I guess.

I got NO problem with people being like "I'm not on mastodon i'm on *key*"
Whatever gets activitypub (or something like activitypub) to be the thing!
