  I put mine in a mug of cold water. It cools the egg down to a reasonable temperature and the heat shock separates the membrane.

  If the egg is soft-boiled? If it's hard boiled, what usually works well is to crack it and roll it a round on a hard surface. If the eggs is fresh and cooked correctly, The shell should then be very easy to remove...

  We had one of those as a kid, I loved mechanical kitchen gizmos so using it was fun. I also really liked bottle openers, can openers and the garlic press.
