    • Sriram "sri" Ramkrishna - 😼

I have a lot to say about #LAS2023, #Linux, and my old #podcast Linux For Everyone. So those thoughts might be scattered or confined to this thread, but here we go because things need to be said!

First: @sri was dead-on when he described LAS as a family reunion. Such a warmth and feeling of camaraderie to the event. I made new friends, new work connections, and forged some new pathways in my brain thanks to eye-opening talks.

Some of those talks inspired me to take action...

@sri ...what kind of action? First and foremost, reviving the Linux For Everyone show. It was (and hopefully still is) a good platform for generating discussion and raising awareness about important stuff.

One of those important things is sustainable software. I was blown away by some very sobering statistics about how the smallest in-app activities can impact the environment.

There are so many ripple effects... it's staggering. this topic needs more awareness, more action, more discussion.

...Think about how often you're talking to people about the advantages of #Linux and #OpenSource software. Or at least HEARING about that discussion.

What advantages are mentioned? Privacy? Hell yea. Freedom? Damn right. Price? Most likely? Customization? Yup.

What about #FOSS having an advantage when it comes to energy consumption? I honestly never hear that. And we need to start screaming that from the mountaintops.

I'm also going to advocate for @thunderbird obtaining eco-certification from Blue Angel, a leading Eco label in Germany. And I have a wonderful friend at @kde who's standing by to help with testing and submission processes!

Shaving those CPU-seconds off transaction time can have a MAJOR impact on the environment when you're talking about millions of users.

So yea... I had a lot to say. Stay tuned, I'll have more. . .

@tylnesh And if the @AsahiLinux project can retain all of that energy efficiency, Apple Silicon will look even more appealing.

@killyourfm exactly. The one thing I really like about the Apple Sillicon computers is their energy efficiency. They may not be as powerful as newest Ryzens or Intels and their GPU lags massively against both AMD and NVidia, but their performance per watt is great. I don’t want my next desktop workstation to require a nuclear power plant. I want my computers to be ever more compact, light and only sipping power, while still having a ton of RAM and performance when needed.

@tylnesh Also? Every time I turn on my tower PC now, I feel guilty...

@baldpolnareffart and you’re a data scientist or striving to be, right? It might be very helpful to have someone who can intelligently crunch the numbers (what does the ecological footprint of X result look like expanded out to 1 million people?) or provide useful insights and data.

Let’s keep in touch about this.

@killyourfm As someone who's got an M1 chip this is literally what I'm screaming for, efficiency. It's unfortunate that on the hardware side we don't have anything that's equivalent as an open standard, but we can still do something that would impact positively on a large scale, on the software side.
I published a paper in material science where sustainability was the core topic, investigating this aspect in open source software development would be really interesting and potentially useful

@DonMcCollough KDE Eco is a wonderful initiative. I’m hoping that both personally and via Thunderbird I can amplify what they’re doing and encourage other orgs to follow.

@killyourfm KDE is the only one that seems to advocate for energy consumption (as they're the only one I've seen so far to have this mentioned on their website before with KDE Eco
