So my dad's ~chiropractor~ "prescribed" him a million high-dose supplements. An overdose of vitamin D can cause exactly the symptoms of the new heart condition that is disabling him. He is taking about ten times the dose described as "dangerous" in studies.
His fucking chiropractor.
There are so many people ready to harm elderly people for a bit if dosh.
My dad is now shut up in a bedroom, running a heater full blast, wearing a coat, staring into the middle distance.
He blames himself for his sudden decline, for not properly following his YouTube health advice.
Apparently, when this started, he went to one of Texas's "cash-only" emergency rooms (A&E) and said something wasn't right. His lungs felt like they had fluid. They'd given him a blood test which didn't show an infection, but he was insistent, so for $50 extra, they xrayed his chest and found fluid, so a vending machine dispensed some antibiotics.
I don't k ow of he failed to mention his newish heart stent or it just never occurred to them to check if he was having atrial fibrillation, but it seems like they just sent him to drive himself home in the middle of a heart attack.
I just. Cash-only emergency room??
He might not be dying, but he is also not going to get better.
The next hurdle will be dealing with a telephone consult with my surgeon. The NHS can't call UK phone numbers if the phone is abroad. So will they zoom?
If you say you made your booking through ba.com, you fail the security check. ba.com redirects to britishairways.com and we only use proper domain names on this phone line.
Media literacy is great and a good idea, but also not an adequate answer. Especially not for people who are vulnerable. There needs to be accountability and justice for people harmed by disinformation, especially health disinformation. There's a reason that we have licensing scheme for doctors instead of relying on a "buyer beware" model. Health influencers should not be a thing.
Also, bloody hell, supplements should be regulated. Like, why are dangerous doses of things for sale in the first place??
Everything I can think of to help is actively impeded in one way or another by fucking YouTube misinformation. Because the goal of disinfo channels is to increase isolation and vulnerability, and they're really fucking good at doing that.
And Google knows. And they have made an affirmative decision that this is fine. This is what they're for. This is how they make their money.
I am fully committed to making it awkward for anybody who works for a company that exploits vulnerable people.
"Oh, I don't work in the division that actively preys on the elderly," yeah keep explaining that. Harming my family - harming any vulnerable people - is a red line.
How much do people own their own bodies. Is it right to fight about too many vitamins? I feel like he does not understand the risks of his actions, but I don't know.
Old people: Dr Quak-YouTube's Stay Alive formula of 3g of daily lead is keeping me alive! Give it back! You're trying to kill me!
Family members: I am not trying to kill you. Also, I need information about your bank accounts, retirement accounts, savings, investments and any property you own.
