After I walked around a store for a while today, pushing a cart, it occurred to me that we wear "step counters" on our wrists, not our ankles. That makes no sense. Any time you're taking steps but your arm isn't moving, your steps are not being counted.

Who is "we"? :P
I use my phone in my front pocket to count my steps.

@simsa04 @geniusmusing Because a good portion of my daily walking is within a single spot--whether a building at work, or the house and yard at home--that won't show up on a map.

Exercise tracking for me, I have a step goal set and usually get there or beyond 5-6 days a week.
Why would I need a map of my house (my commute for work is about 30 feet if I take the long way) and to the mailbox (500 steps round trip)?

@simsa04 @geniusmusing When I was more physically active, the idea of regularly counting my steps would have merited a laugh, though I would have been curious enough to be willing to wear a counter for a day.
But now, when a day that I don't go anywhere can end with only 3K steps and an active day can end with 10K, 12K, or occasionally even 15K-22K, counting steps is an important reminder to be more active.

While my numbers may not be as high, the same reasoning. I have found over time that if I don't keep an average step count at a level I start gaining weight. Not doing any exercise at all, typically a Sunday, I only get in about 1.5k-2k steps unless Sunday happens to be the day I mow the lawn and then Saturday goes into that range.

It is more about maintaining my weight, and while it might not burn as many calories as running or other activities, it is better than no activities. I am pretty close to balanced in intake calories and calories burned and I have lost a lot of weight (around 85 lbs) over many years and want to keep it off, the step count is my way of keeping it that way.

Here is my high step count from the end of last year.
There is a bug somewhere that goes nuts on time zone change. https://nu.federati.net/attachment/290112
