OK then. After about 48 hours trying to figure out the nuances of running my own #Mastodon instance, I am wholeheartedly ready to give someone like @jan at #TootIO my money to do it for me?.
PeerTube I can handle. Mastodon is just out of my depth, and that's OK.

@sesivany I get that reasoning. I have heard from a few single-user mastodon admins that it sometimes feels like living in a silo.

@killyourfm @jan I self-host almost everything, but there are two things I don't want to run myself: email and Mastodon.
In case of Mastodon it's not only for technical reasons, it's a social network, I want to be part of a community, not on my own.

@jan For what it's worth, this is one of the reasons I want my own #Mastodon instance. The anxiety that bubbles up inside is a bit uncomfortable when I wonder "What if it just doesn't come back online?"

@killyourfm Why not try #Friendica or #Hubzilla? Or say, #Calckey? There is also #Socialhome. Other than Calckey, the other three can connect to the #Diaspora network, too, which itself have a large following.
I used to run my own Friendica and Hubzilla instances on a cheap VPS hosting. To not feel ‘lonely’, subscribe your instance to a discovery service/relay. It should give your federation timeline more activities.
But, yes, if I decide to have my own instance again, I'll prefer a managed hosting, and I'll pick #Streams and Calckey next.

@youronlyone Thanks for the suggestions! I honestly don't know anything about those services (though I do know the names).
I have 7K followers on Mastodon though. Not something I want to abandon.

@ln That much I know, thanks. But isn't @youronlyone talking about other services on the Fediverse, not Mastodon? I could be mistaken... its' been a long year.

@killyourfm @youronlyone when you migrate your account to another instance the followers get that information and are invited to follow you there too if I’m not mistaken. Either way if you are looking to host yourself try Linode. They even have an installation script for Mastodon.

@ln @youronlyone And it's an excellent recommendation! I use Linode already to host my site, and a couple days ago I fired up another Linode for Cloudron, where https://social.midreality.lives (I've been toying with hosting my own instance already, but feel overwhelmed).

@killyourfm @jan I can’t find the article, but there are also al kinds of “caveats” when your account exists on a smaller (number of people) instance. Missing content, etc.
