   It's been fascinating to see people in different regions come to the same realization recently: If you want to actually reduce emissions you need to shut down the thing that makes money.

   In some places it's the car industry, elsewhere it's tourism, cash crop monoculture, winter sports, you name it. Whatever sector makes up most of the local economy is *also* the one that's emitting tons of carbon, using all the water and energy, and generally destroying the environment.

     @McNeely That's not what @tbernard is talking about, though. He's talking about, quote:

     Have you ever visited a town where the only factory that the town has been living off of has closed down? I have. It's not pretty.

     @drq @tbernard You don't need to 'cease to exist' just stop trying to endlessly grow. The idea is called "Degrowth" and generally speaking its that you first seek to reduce to sustainable level and don't grow for the sake of growth (something that is pretty much anathema to capitalist system that runs the world). From there you focus on growing in ways that can be sustainable over the long term.

     At least under the current system.
