ok, so I followed instructions at https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2022/04/how-to-install-firefox-deb-apt-ubuntu-22-04 - took forever and it was, up to that point, painless to do. So I restart Firefox and ...

KDE Plasma crashes, I reboot, and now Firefox starts ... HOWEVER it isn't Firefox as I left it moments ago, it is Firefox as I left it last time I used the deb package, only with fresh imports of bookmarks. History is gone, tabs forgotten, not a big deal, but I do wish there'd been some warning.

They are designed to "snap" you to awareness that you don't need Snap.

Remind you that your pack is drained, and you need to re-invigorate with something of higher spirit.

oh, and also, the snap refresh of Firefox takes a looonnnng time.

What I don't know is what, if any, advantage these snap/flatpacks provide to me, the one who must endure them.

What it isn't saying is you need to exit Firefox, THEN sudo snap refresh, and then you can start Firefox and happily use your browser for another week or so before it happens again.

And yes, you can swap it for a non-snap, I found instructions somewhere following an item saying Gnome integration only works with non-snap. Fool that I am, when UbuntuStudio switched to KDE Plasma, I thought I'd retry the snap, but I'm *real* close to swapping it out again.

Actually I just got the desktop notification again. It is ridiculous:

"Pending update of "firefox" snap. Close the app to avoid disruptions (12 days left)"

WTF are you trying to say, Ubuntu? Of course closing the app doesn't trigger the update, so I will RTFM later today how to get rid of this annoyance, or reinstall FF with apt this time. @lutindiscret sent a good guide of doing that quickly enough ?

On Ubuntu the Snaps feel like crammed in.

Like for Firefox I get nagged by notification: "Snap needs to upgrad in 13 days, close program then" or something. Clicking the notification doesn't bring you to upgrade screen.

Then navigating to Applications, Firefox in list is marked "installed", but on clicking the entry it says "Install", no indication it is already there.

Since Flatpak aren't Ubuntu's experience may be even worse.

@humanetech @teledyn I haven’t tried Flatpak on Ubuntu, but Flatpak apps work like normal apps on Fedora. They have an app icon and everything.

@teledyn I just got exposed to both #snap and #flatpak and both don't leave a good impression.

With flatpak that may be because #Ubuntu doesn't like them as a competitor, or something went wrong in the install. But apps installed weren't added to Applications in the UI and should be started from CLI with non-intuitive flatpak names.

Anyway after a clean install adventure with countless shit, I decided I won't get my elderly parents from Windows to Linux. It is not for them.

@humanetech the bitching about an update is something to endure, but mine does restore tabs, although seems to me that was a config setting somewhere.

I don't get 'snap', and I wonder if flatpack is the same. I had one app depend on a snap-based service, with a potential to have others, but again, on each update, all dependent apps must shut?

I use Linux, and one of the PERKS is only needing a reboot for a kernel fix, and even then it's at my leisure.

Freaking hell.. #Firefox doesn't restore tabs after a reboot?? I hope this was a one-off nasty surprise, and not related to my new Ubuntu 22.04 and the thing living inside a snap. which is bitching about an update.
