   Honestly it just makes me sad sometimes how little effort the Linux tech press puts into fact checking. Like seriously just reach out to project leads if you have questions. So much stuff gets posted with wild misinformation all the time

     @danirabbit I see this all the time. Articles of the "Top 5 best open-source X" variety, and they don't mention the actually best software available, just the most popular ones that you've already ears about but they aren't that great, completely screw up the facts, and then have mutually exclusive pros and cons for each one to top things off. Are these articles written by AI?

     @unfa @danirabbit These are so awful. And here's something you both need to know: I was approached by a SALES rep for 2 sites (one of which has a multi-million dollar yearly revenue) , asking if Thunderbird wanted to be listed as #1 in their upcoming "Top 5 Best Email Software of 2023" post.

     It included an invitation to respond to discuss pricing...

     @danirabbit @unfa It's fucking disgusting. The proper term for them is "native advertisements" but they will do everything in their power to disguise the fact it's paid-for content.

     @killyourfm @unfa Yep, I used to get those sorts of things all the time when I worked in the restaurant biz. All those “top” articles are just content advertisements

     @killyourfm @danirabbit Wow. That's worse than I thought. Though I don't think the small FOSS projects pay to be in these lists, it's just cheap content that makes clicks. Authors probably have to write 4 of these every day, that's why the quality is so bad.

     @unfa @killyourfm This is the kind of shit emails I get sent all the time now
