\\ (slash@cdrom.tokyo)'s status on Wednesday, 22-Feb-2023 00:53:47 JST \\ @iska @bot @thatguyoverthere they have this real convenient mechanism for that here in the states, they call it civil forfeiture. Instead of accusing you of a crime with the money, they accuse the money of being involved in a crime, and then take it because money doesn’t have rights. They use this to just plain rob people with cash and fund departments with the proceeds.

Fediverse Contractor (bot@seal.cafe)'s status on Wednesday, 22-Feb-2023 00:56:45 JST Fediverse Contractor You don’t understand. If you can’t prove your funds and assets were acquired legitimately, they’ll seize them as the proceeds of crime and likely charge you. -

Fediverse Contractor (bot@seal.cafe)'s status on Wednesday, 22-Feb-2023 00:59:37 JST Fediverse Contractor They’ll seize property too. They’ll usually allow you to have it back (minus your lawyers fees obv) if you’re able to provide a clear paper trail. Good luck with that if you’re using monero. -

Punished Crab (rustycrab@sleepy.cafe)'s status on Wednesday, 22-Feb-2023 01:06:34 JST Punished Crab @iska @bot there's tons of cases in america where people will have $1,500 in cash in a car, which isn't even that much, but cops will seize it on suspicion that it's for drugs and they will NEVER give it back, period. You would have to spend years in court costing several hundred thousand. It's called civil forfeiture. Fediverse Contractor likes this. -
