Is there a Fediverse version of Strava?
(fitness social network app)
Is there a Fediverse version of Strava?
(fitness social network app)
I'd certainly be interested in this!
? ? ? Wondering if there's enough people interested in a fitness-tracking Fediverse instance to explore setting one up?
(reason being that Strava is £££ and centralised, and also non-runners/cyclists/swimmers might get annoyed with daily spamming of the regular timeline...)
#Strava blocks API access if it finds apps to be competitive with their app.
Example is Segment Challenge, an #Elixir app that demonstrates the flexibility of applying Domain Driven Design (DDD). Website was shut down by Strave revoking API access.
But the project could be a basis for a #Fediverse app that works with other fitness-tracking devices, more open ones at that.

PS. There's no License, so I just created an issue to ask about that.
@potato_lisper For sure, but people can choose what to post.
I guess Strava gives you the option of not including GPS data within X metres of a specific location (e.g. your house) which is pretty useful...
@dajb@social.coop but, maybe I will go back to that at some point in feature ?
@dajb@social.coop I had this idea at some point. The only problem is privacy in all of this. Fitness data is very personal.
As for #privacy..
- People should be in full control of what they share
- They might share first to their Circle or Club. A group of friends or local sports club
- Clubs might share generalized non-PII metrics
- Then there are public Challenges. "The London Marathon", "Climb the Mont Blanc", "My town's yearly local sports event" where it is perfectly fine if they are public, and you can say "I participated in the Nijmegen 4-day walk and improved my last year's record"
Instead of #Strava the software might be facilitating open technologies.
I have a bunch of example projects on the awesome humane tech curated list I maintain, like #GadgetBridge, #FitoTrack, #OpenTracks and #GoldenCheetah
Sure, but that's the added sauce we'd wanna add on top then ;p
@humanetech@mastodon.social @dajb@social.coop they are very good but they lack social aspect, this little rivalry between people
@humanetech@mastodon.social @dajb@social.coop perfectly it would be mix between strava and myfitnesspal where you could track everything fitness, will use OSM for maps and have some challenge aspect like Fibit bingo or Strava challenge sections (don't remember how they are called). I would skip implementing tracking apps, as mentioned earlier we have good apps there, just integration with them (automatic exports)
@potato_lisper @humanetech I'm starting to think that actually a @bonfire instance would be better for this because you could have different topics (and circles)
Not everyone has the same intent. Some people post all of their stuff publicly (like me). Others are more private.
Some want to be competitive (like me). Others just want to encourage one another and talk about gear ?
Yes, #Bonfire would come a long way to supporting things out of the box and it can be flexibly extended.
Btw, I don't have a #fitness tracker myself, but looked at the #Strava activity types and they are mighty versatile. Somehow I mostly associated them with running :)
@dajb @potato_lisper @humanetech @bonfire
I recently gave a try to https://centr.com/ to get back in a good shape after a year of doing almost nothing. I agree that #topics could be a good addition 'cause users this way could curate lists of #nutritions / #fitness / #gym / whatever resources together - on top of all the other features you already mentioned
Thanks for all of the great replies! I wrote a post and would love answers / suggestions / comments on the questions at the end!

(please boost for reach!)
@humanetech @dajb @potato_lisper actually there is a fork of #OpenTracks (incl. webpage) with social features.
I guess it is used by a small cycling group in the Czech Repulic.
But the code was never released.

@dennisguse @humanetech @potato_lisper
Thanks! @epilepticrabbit is interested, so we're going to have a chat this morning (given that all of our co-op are runners and/or cyclists) to get the ball rolling... ?
@dajb @dennisguse @humanetech @potato_lisper @epilepticrabbit I use an app called Overland to send location data to a service I wrote. This gets stored as GPS logs in JSON files on disk. It includes whether I’m running or walking but lacks any fitness analysis. I’ve thought about augmenting with health metrics but never picked it up.
I've written a post about how to help with v0.1 of a code of conduct for exercise.cafe before I open it up for initial testing
@pixelfed If you'd like to help me test this out, DM me!
I'll need to know:
1. What kind of exercise you usually do (to try and get a range)
2. Whether you have prior experience of Pixelfed (again, to get a spread of experience)
3. Why you'd like an account
???
?️♂️⛷️?♀️ Update on this, I've registered exercise.cafe and set up a @pixelfed instance using @support
Registrations are currently closed while I do the following:
1. Create v0.1 of a Code of Conduct I'm happy with
2. Experiment with a selection of images that test users can discuss / vote on for the exercise.cafe icon
3. Get used to the Pixelfed admin interface
4. Have a think about useful hashtags for various activities
5. Find people to invite as users
