@ygalanter@taylorlorenz this has nothing to do with anything they’re saying, it’s simply a cost savings measure.
If they have say 200 million accounts with text message 2FA on and an account uses it like 10x per year that’s 2 billion text messages. Idk what they pay but if it’s 5¢ a pop that’s 100 million dollars. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (these numbers courtesy of pulling them out of my ass, but it’s definitely some substantial amount)
@thomasfuchs Oh this totally makes sense. But the deranged message they put out about 2FA shows that they fired comm department as another cost-cutting measure.
@RamboSmitten@ygalanter@taylorlorenz They didn’t mess up anything—they’re doing this purely to save money by sending fewer text messages and to make more money by giving Twitter Blue a new feature (which they think will send more subscriptions).
There’s absolutely zero consideration from them that this anything to do with security.
@ygalanter@thomasfuchs@taylorlorenz they totally messed up the messaging on this. If they removed SMS 2fa and marketed it as being security forward, they probably would have gotten more support and could have removed this entire service.
