     @jeffcliff circular buffer, they hold all phone calls for several days before they are overwritten. the "purpose" is if something happens, they can stop the data rotation and sift through everything.

     that article is paywalled so i can't be sure but what exactly does it say about illegal domestic surveillance?
     
     and what does it say about things that work to protect you from that surveillance?
     
     chances are good they completely skipped the part where what they were doing was illegal, evidence of what they were doing being illegal, and what helps to stop the NSA from being able to completely compromise you: that's what snowden did
     
     People understood what the NSA was doing shortly after 9/11 if even that late (see AT&T v. Hepting), they just couldn't prove it was illegal until snowden

     @nousnaut i am not sure what i think because they tried to keep it a secret, then it came out, and then they ended up not denying it but just kinda got the media to get us to forget/not care. most people don't know and if you tell them they don't care. a small portion of people are afraid of it

     It's all a matter of public framing, not knowledge of their operations. They don't care if people know about their operations, as long as the narrative is framed favorably or is at least not overly hostile to them. It's the difference between "look at the cool tech of this massive domestic spying operation" and "look at how creepy it is that there is a massive domestic spying operation"; with Snowden for a short while they lost control over the framing of that knowledge.
