     If there's already an EMT managing the situation first aiders are usually told to step back and let them deal with it. If they ignore that advice then, yeah, they're idiots.
     
     Also hard to do CPR without hurting someone. Bad bruising at the very minimum, more likely a few cracked ribs. I talked to a corpsman in the Irish navy once and he said he performed CPR on 10 people, none of them recovered. It's a bit of a hail mary.
     
     He did say a colleague of his had brought someone back at the airport though.

     Yeah probably a bad example, but hopefully my point got across, if the person is fucked without your intervention, and you try, it should be really, really hard to nail you for harm unless you do something really fucking stupid.

     It makes sense with adequate presumption of good faith and recognizing extenuating circumstances (stress of the situation) and the severity of the mistakes.

     I guess it also depends heavily on the situation. If you botch CPR when nobody else is around in the middle of nowhere, vs jumping at the chance when there’s an EMT right there and hurting the person.

     I guess “would a reasonable person, under similar amounts of stress, potentially decide that their intervention was necessary to prevent severe bodily injury or death” if yes, standards for prosecuting harm caused go way up.

     That's common law too though. There's no duty to rescue, but once you do, you have a duty to act reasonable or you can be held liable.

     Nah, it goes beyond that in chinkland. If you render any assistance at all they can later claim you caused harm and the reason their back was broken in three places was because you held their head wrong, not because they got hit by a truck.
     
     Most countries have good samaritan laws to prevent that so that provided you do reasonably sensible things in good faith you're not held to the same standards as medical professionals.

     Common law makes sense to me at very general level. You're basically not conscripted by the government to change the natural course of events or to put yourself at risk (drowning comes to mind, rescues are particularly dangerous).
     
     If you do, you become a causal agent and have to answer for what you caused.
