NEW: CBS News president and CEO Wendy McMahon is stepping down from the network.

In a memo to staff, she cited leadership differences: "It's become clear that the company and I do not agree on the path forward."

    @sun

    NAS has ~1.4k active accounts.

At $6 per, it would take a mere $8,400 to have sophisticated bots in equal proportion to legitimate users.

$33,600, $55 less than a new model Hybrid Honda Accord, buys you control of 80% of the network.

In practice, it probably only takes a percent or two to poison the well.

AI has significantly lowered the bar for creating linguistically passable bots.

It will continue to be abused.

    There is no technical solution.

    Acceptance is the only solution.

@wjmaggos Well the other half of the ax that I grind is that I wish Fediverse developers had much more of a focus on end users, on letting end empowering end users to shape their experiences the way they want so that different people can use the same platform in different ways.

We do see some of that with, for example, picture posting sites existing alongside the microblogging sites. Different interfaces just have to figure out how to handle different types of content coming across.

But taking it a step farther, this is why I emphasize ActivityPub being not so much decentralized as centralized around instances. That is a constraint that prevents this platform from being as flexible to different users.

And I think ATProtocol seems more decentralized and more flexible so that more users can have different sorts of experiences all on the same network.

In a way it’s like how web traffic and email all coexist on the internet. If you decentralize more control you can have more different approaches to the experience.

Bluesky has announced that today they have started with federation, allowing anyone to host their own data on the #bluesky network.

In a blog post they announced that anyone can now host their own PDS, framing it as a way to control your own data, and also explaining how it differs from Mastodon.

Bluesky describes it as an 'early access of federation for self-hosters'.

I'm no fool. Meta is definitely going to try to "embrace, extend, and extinguish" if they actually follow through on a decentralized social network.

In my view, they're no different from Cloudflare.

But you know what we just caused them to do? Acknowledge the Fediverse.

    Think about that.
