That said, obviously it's better to spend 100K than 10M, it's better for taxpayers, etc but I think the energy around build vs buy has dissipated somewhat in 'civic tech'.

I almost feel as if the cost of the extra expensive contractors is the cost of.. it becoming politically and fiscally difficult now to consider significant full time employee headcounts, in a climate of cost reduction and budget deficits. It's not quite austerity time the way it is elsewhere but

I would be surprised if any team could add more than 1-5 full time roles in any fiscal year now. On top of salaries, benefits, and also pensions are a big deal. City / state budgets are a blood sport that only skilled operators know how to operate in.

So that extra 9.9M (using a figurative no) is the administrative burden of not being able to hire full time employees because of fears of rising pensions, etc.

From that observer who was taken yesterday, shared here with permission, because we could all use a good laugh. (Note: Whipple is the fed bldg that’s ICE’s MSP HQ)

❝So here’s my story about returning to the world…

When they let you out of Whipple, they give you back your personal effects (minus your phone). And just send you out the front door with whatever you were wearing when you came in.

So I’m walking out the front door of Whipple, probably looking like an ice agent coming off shift, and pulling all of my random shit out of my bag/dropping it in the snowbank, etc.… And I can hear the protesters at the gate, taunting me… “oh did you drop your phone, you piece of shit?” “You’re TERRIBLE!” “Fucking Nazi!” And I was just loving it, actually. But when I got closer and used my big voice “You assholes are barking up the wrong tree…. These MF’ers just released me!” The crowd went absolutely crazy.❞

I was not expecting to be out of work for this long. So it should be no surprise hosting starnix is affected. However I am not announcing that I am shutting it down, at least not yet.

I have secured a colocation site as of September last year, I have been testing its viability for the past few months. It currently is hosting https://videos.danksquad.org . Normally I've tried to keep Danksquad and Starnix infrastructure separate but I'm out of options the little money I was making is even less now and my insurance premiums went up.

You might ask, why I'm even making this post when I should just shutdown. it's because I'm stubborn and I want to outlive my enemies, I like shouting into the void and sometimes getting a shout back. I like posting my photography, aidorus, and gymrat spam even when nobody cares about what I'm doing. I don't like relying on others for support (even for donations) it's always ended poorly for me. Also all this sysadmin stuff involved with fediverse and self hosting helps me practice skills and solve problems that I would normally not be able to learn elsewhere, which by itself I find value in.

So my intention is to move Starnix to colocation. It's not good colocation but I don't have a choice. The only reason I would shut everything down is that the update and migration process is too difficult to perform or I exhaust my hardware capacity (unlikely).

So the migration process will go as follows.

mstdn.starnix.network uses a custom fork called v4.4.0-alpha.1+chuckya which is a glitch-soc fork, it also has some custom UI that I have modified and installed. All of this needs to be updated to the latest and then I can make a target VM to transfer the database to.

I have tried (lazily) to update in the past from my phone (📱) but it failed for some reason. I will put more effort into looking through all dependencies and making sure everything is correct for updating. But if it really does look like it is impossible to migrate only then I will announce I can no longer run the instance. The same thing goes for Pleroma but I expect that one to be easier to migrate.

It would be pretty funny to pick a new domain name if I do close the instance to fuck with all the people/instances that block/slander us for dumb reasons, but I'll only do that if I close and after I get my bag (💰).

    Absolutely.

It's also worth mentioning that Denmark had opted out of EU defense initiatives as they felt NATO sufficed and any EU ambitions were overreach.
But shortly after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Denmark held a referendum to join in.

So yeah, complacency everywhere, with few notable exceptions, and Macron being the obvious example.

The licenses of Llama and Deepseek contain clear violations of the Open Source Definition, these things are *not* Open Source at a more fundamental level.

The new Open Source AI Definition doesn't even kick in.

    So much noise and disinformation.

Two years ago I wrote an article with a tongue-in-cheek title prophesizing that the fediverse will "win".

    https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/yes-the-fediverse-will-win/

Yes, I still stand by that, I think we just hit a bit of a speed bump.

To get back on the track, we have to double down on what makes the fediverse great: it's grassroots, it's DIY, it works because of all the effort we all put in.

So consider this a reminder to donate to your server admins and to the developers of your platform.

    #fediverse
