   @w96k@fosstodon.org I don't like that php language has a bit too much quirks and workarounds that haven't been fixed for decades.Such as?
   I don't like that it is still a templating engine. That it is not general purpose.That is very subjective. I like PHP precisely because it doesn't try to be general purpose. It is intended for web development and is the best at that. I don't tend to like software that tries to do everything.
   The thing with declare(strict_types=1) feels like a joke, because using 1 as a boolean in this case is just funny.It actually makes sense. Many declarable directives have more than a single value, such as ticks=100 and stuff like that. It always requiring an integer option is consistent.
   
   I also I advice people to not use strict types in PHP. I think this ruins one of the best parts of PHP, its very powerful weak typing system. I see strict_types=1 only used by people who hate PHP and are used to other languages. Please just turn it off and learn the advantages of weak typing, it's worth it.
   But I think the most of all I don't like array-hashmap data-structure. I hope they will add typehint for this to distinguish list and hashmap in runtime. They will not fix it.This is also not an issue that they will "fix", because it is not broken. PHP Arrays are purposefully designed in a way that they are extremely versatile and they do not burden the programmer with which type of hashmap or list or whatever you should be using. The interpreter figures out the best solution for you which I personally think is really neat.

   I learned about population, growth, and total fertility rate from this TED talk by the late Hans Rosling, a scientist with an irrepressible way of talking about statistics as not only interesting but exciting and funny.

   It's from 2006 but the trends in population growth have continued since then.
