Image of a US Guardian headline, featuring a widely spread Associated Press story about the murder of 16 year old Nex Benedict. The headline seriously reads "Vigils held for nonbinary Oklahoma teen who died day after school fight" and the sub-headline says "Nex Benedict, 16, who said they were a target of bullying, got into an altercation with three girls in Owasso high school bathroom." The words "school fight" and "got into an altercation" are underlined in red to demonstrate how queerphobic our society and even mainstream "liberal" papers are when covering violence against trans, nonbinary, and queer people - including literal children. Image features 3 mourners at the vigil engaged in a group hug, finding community together even in the face of tragedy.

Don't tell me trans and queerphobia is only coming from "the right" because I'm tired of hearing it. This is about a 16 year old nonbinary kid, who was beaten by 3 girls in a school restroom, and ultimately DIED of their injuries the next day. It wasn't a school fight, and they didn't "get into an altercation" - they were KILLED for standing up for a trans friend in a state with normalized queer phobia as POLICY. This is the AP story, which means DOZENS of "liberal" papers ran it JUST like this.
