The obvious lesson that we need to learn from this is that the only reason the American system of government has survived as long as it has is not because of the Constitutional separation of powers, but because of the strength of broad social norms that mitigated the tendency of people intent on destroying the government from within from being elected, in the first place.

We can see this now, because there are no legal or constitutional constraints on what the Trump Administration is doing.

I'm very glad I figured out how to print label in Japanese from my Brother P-Touch, so I can finally replace the romaji labels on my spice jars. Also in the background at upper left is a sealed, unopened 1960's vintage bottle of Ajinomoto ハイミー I bought via Yahoo! Japan Auctions and paid a bazillion yen to have shipped to me in the US.

I didn't even know Hi Mi existed, until I spotted the jar on the table during breakfast in this film from 1966. It took a bit, but I tracked it down via some Ajinomoto company history documents.

I actually meant to open the bottle and use the dispenser, but once I got it, I couldn't bear to break the 60 year old seal.

I also got a 1 Kg bag of Hi Mi in that order, but I'm still using up my regular Ajinomoto MSG, as well, so I've barely put a dent in the Hi Mi.

The biggest logistical difference between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party is that the Democratic coalition is extremely fragile, and rarely coheres, while the Republican coalition rarely breaks ranks.

Probably the best we can hope for in the new Congress is infighting caused by the most insane members of the Republican Party. Do not dare to hope that less extreme Republicans will have a change of heart.
