This might seem obvious, but I'm a big fan of instances that are culturally or geographically centred because it makes moderation way fucking easier. I think it might be the single best thing about decentralised social media. The people moderating the posts on mastodon.ie know exactly what bigotry looks like here. And that matters a lot. UK instances can probably smell TERFspeak a million miles away while it would fly under the radar elsewhere.
I am so exhausted by the discourse about .lol shutting down. Elon Musk literally bought twitter in a tantrum, and has made it so you basically cannot avoid seeing right wing disinformation in your feed and somehow Mastodon, where you have full control over your feed and can move from instance to instance is The Bad Thing. No, it's not perfect, and nothing is, but come on, this is an enormous improvement.
