#Repost (@racingextinction ) South America is on fire, experiencing drought conditions that haven't been seen since 1902, and the Amazon River has reached levels that are sending shockwaves across the globe.
"The fires are out of control" said Efrain Tinta Guachalla, a socio-territorial investigator at Fundaciรณn Tierra, a Bolivian NGO dedicated to sustainable rural development.
While occasional wildfires in Europe and the American West are normal considering the climate,
"Forests like the Amazon are historically tropical forests, meaning they've never burned, they've never coexisted with the fire. This is terribly tragic for the ecosystem and the world. The Amazon is in its worst state of the last 50 years."
Here are some facts:
1. The Amazon rainforest historically, has never burned-it's too wet and humid. 2. So far this year, an area the size of Italy has burned in Brazil.
he continued, the humid Amazon is never meant to burn. He says that rainforest flora and fauna are being wiped out at unprecedented rates.
"The fires in California or the fires in Europe, those aren't the same as the fires in South America. There's an enormous difference in the loss of biodiversity." said Guillermo Villalobos, a political scientist focusing on climate science at Bolivian nonprofit Fundaciรณn Solon.
7. Fires consume 9% of the world's LARGEST Wetland area, the Pantanal, in South America. 8. Bolivia declared a national emergency due to raging forest fires the country's defense ministry announced last Saturday.
(These fires are mostly started by locals wanting to clear land to raise cattle to supply China, the US, and the EU with beef.) 3. 60% of Brazil is covered by smoke 4. In 2024 alone, 160,000 fires were registered in Brazil. 5. The Amazon river reached its lowest level since records began in 1902. 6. More than 2 million Indigenous people depend on the river for food and transportation, and the drought left entire communities stranded without fuel, food, and drinking water.
While the world focuses on the #olympics in Paris, just a short flight away in the North Atlantic, in the #FaroeIslands, whalers continue their cruel drive hunts, slaughtering hundreds of #whales and #dolphins. ๐ด Letโs show the same dedication to saving lives as we do for celebrating our athletes. Get involved now and help us #StopTheGrind.
Stop the Cruel Dolphin and Whale Hunts in the Faroe Islands
Over 850 pilot whales were hunted last year alone, and since the turn of the century, more than 20,000 cetaceans โ pilot whales, white-sided dolphins, and bottlenose dolphins โ have been massacred off the Faroese shore.
The tragic slaughter of 90 pilot whales in Hvalvik, #FaroeIslands โand a staggeringโ592โin just 8 weeksโdemands our immediate action.
'There is no easy solution to ending this cruelty. The older generation of whalers are holding on to their traditional killing like their lives depend on it, and they are doing their best to inspire the younger generation to join in.' - Valentina Crast, Shepherd's Faroe Islands Campaign Lead
"It's hard to explain to a small child why he and his mother are leaving and his father is staying. It is hard to calm down an 80-year-old grandmother, who spent her whole life in one city that she won't be able to live out her old age there anymore."
NORRHERN CALIFORNIA TRIBE TO GET BACK 125 ACRES OF ANCESTRAL LAND STOLEN DURING GOLD RUSH
Julie Watson/ Associated Press/ Mar 20
Californiaโs Yurok Tribe, which had 90% of its territory taken from it during the #GoldRush of the mid-1800s, will be getting a slice of its land back to serve as a new gateway to Redwood National and State Parks visited by 1 million people a year.
The planet is in emergency and governments need to start investing in solutions for the climate crisis rather than prosecuting those that try to raise the alarm.
The "Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return" clause, which has been applied in the law until today, is on the agenda to be changed and dogs will be confined to #shelters and forced to live there. #AnimalRights advocates in Tรผrkiye have been exposing evidence that these so-called shelters are in fact #death camps and animals are #tortured in unimaginable ways. If the law is passed, sick dogs, banned breeds and physiologically impaired dogs will be "euthanized",
DEMAND THE GOVERNMENT OF TรRKIYE REVERSE NEW LAW TO KILL STRAY ANIMALS ๐พ
We call on the parliament to reverse the new law that calls for the "euthanasia" of stray animals in #Tรผrkiye and their isolation in confined spaces. People in Tรผrkiye have been sharing their streets with #dogs for centuries.
As scientific studies have shown, effective #sterilization programs, stopping #production, and banning the trade of animals will adjust the population balance without the need for #slaughter.
and even healthy, neutered/spayed, and non-aggressive dogs could be #killed without justification, solely to reduce their #population. The new law does not ban the production and #TradeOfAnimals, one of the main sources of population growth. It does not establish an inspection network for cats and dogs abandoned by their owners. It does not impose criminal sanctions for #violence against animals. We remind that all living beings have the right to live freely.
Every summer, the Faroe Islandsโ beaches are soaked with #whale and #dolphin blood as hundreds of these majestic creatures are needlessly slaughtered.
Fishers in boats circle the whales and dolphins, driving them into shallow waters before killing them with knives.
The government says it is an Indigenous tradition that feeds families on the islands, but only a handful of locals consume whale and dolphin meat yet they kill over 1000 a year.
In 2022, the government limited the number of Atlantic white-sided dolphins that could be killed a year to 500, after over 1400 were killed in 2021, sparking global fury. This shows that public pressure works , and if we turn up the heat on the government of the #FaroeIslands we could force a full #ban!
Experts have said that the lack of sufficient international political pressure is the main reason this murderous practice continues.
We can stop this #horror. #Iceland just banned the cruel practice after massive public pressure. If enough of us speak out we can force the Faroese government to stop this brutal #killing spree.
Add your name to ask the Faroese government to end this bloody hunt.
The hunt is a tradition that dates many years ago, when people would hunt dolphins and whales during times of #famine. But those conditions no longer exist.
