That makes total sense to me. Maybe I’ll give Pleroma FE a shot in the future. I just wanted to have something more modern looking for myself and - mainly - for my wife to also comfortably use the Fediverse.

Not saying I don’t understand you. I’ve been to BSPWM, DWM heaven and back. I appreciated the simple, I appreciated the “bloated”.

But to me, Mastodon is bloat. And Pleroma and forks are not bloat.

I know that. I used Mastodon and it was fine. It had too many moving parts for my taste.

So I looked at Pleroma, which I knew. I searched for it on Forums, on Reddit, etc. and somebody said to look at Akkoma and Rebased, too.

So, I did. I compared the two, liked both, didn’t check any background stories on the backends, etc. I just want to use the software. That’s all. And so far, I like it.

While I do appreciate a simple interface like the default Pleroma FE, I do actually like Soapbox. It’s a matter of preference and really no reason to judge, right? I’m not right-winged. I do have controversal opinions, but that’s what a healthy mind should have. I vote left, I worked for the census in my country and I also work as an election helper. So yeah. I just didn’t know the background of Rebased and I really don’t want to switch software again because of some weird beef in the open source commuity.

Exactly! I hosted my Mastodon instance for around a year and I recently switched to Rebased (Pleroma Fork) and it’s far less maintenance, it’s faster, lighter on resources and I light the feature set offered by the Soapbox frontend a lot.

    Absolutely.

In the end, it really doesn’t matter that much, because we can see eachother’s toots, pleromas, etc. But when it comes to features, there are some big differences.

I personally use my own Rebased (Pleroma) instance just for my family, my friends and me as some sort of client for the Fediverse, so the federation is the main part for me, which means I could be at home with Mastodon, Pleroma, Misskey or whatever just fine.

I personally prefer Pleroma and it’s forks, because it’s much lighter on resources, compared to - for example - Mastodon. Pleroma is so much easier to maintain and run, as it has far fewer moving parts.

Oh yes! I personally like to run Arch on most of my systems (desktops and also servers). I know, I know… Arch is not a server OS and “unstable”, yada, yada…

But it just works for me.

Ahh… I really love how few resources Pleroma uses. This is a small LXC container I run it on and it works just fine. ?

When a post on Mastodon is called “toot”, what am I doing right now, when I post something from Pleroma?

Yes - maybe, but my smooth brain wants a simple word that is not “post”. ? ?

I think, I might call it a “pleroma” for now, then.

The thing that just irritates me, is that everyone just refers to Mastodon and Mastodon alone. The Fediverse is much bigger than that and depending on what you’re looking for, Mastodon may not even be the right choice.

As you probably know (because you wrote it in your bio), writing long posts is not that easy with Mastodon, so I personally think that Pleroma is superior (again, for my use case).

Due to the Activity Pub protocol (or system, or whatever) in the background, native clients for Mastodon also work with Pleroma or other Fediverse software, yet Tusky always shows the word “toot”. This is what made me think about what it should be called on Pleroma, instead. So that’s what it is, a “pleroma”. ?

@Jain @batendolatas Tusky's battery drain is negligible. I also use it for my Pleroma instance and it only had 1% background drain so far in 1 day and 11 hours.

Here's my #introduction! My name is Keita (景太) and I'm a software developer and systems administrator, currently living in Germany.

I love free and open source software, especially Linux and everything homelab related (servers and selfhosting stuff).

I'm also open for political topics and am generally interested in learning about different views.

I'm a haver of controversal opinions, sometimes. But going with the flow all the time is boring anyway, right?

    Any questions, #Fediverse? Just ask!
