Long ago, @marypcbuk would refer to #OpenSource "Free as in Puppies" or "Free as in Mattress" which is often true, especially w/projects that have no community support.

When billion dollar corporations toss us peasants their proprietary table scraps, they "gift" us with free puppies, or worse, a free mysterious mattress.

If they truly cared about improving our ecosystem, they'd spend a tiny fraction of percent of their revenue on community building alongside their "gift".

It rarely happens.

And yes they are table scraps. Don't feel guilty for demanding more from grifters.

Some communities must be really insecure or self-conscious about their #OpenSource projects if they constantly feel the need to barge in and bash similar projects whenever someone praises it.

This not only make them and their community look bad, it also makes #FreeSoftware look bad as well.

Innovation and creativity are healthy and should be encouraged, not shunned.

#OpenSource pro tip:

Real-time (synchronous) phone/video/whatever conference calls or meetings *always* exclude potential segments of your community.

Don't be tempted.

In synchronous live meetings, a few dominant personalities dominate the discussion. For asynchronous online communication, everyone gets a chance.

Consider time zone conflicts. Language challenges. Cognitive or physical challenges.

Don't leave these voices out.

Eh, good people and good content, but the logistics are a super disappointment.

Which is unfortunate because they always produced a really lovely and thoughtful in-person event.

:opensource: The #AllThingsOpen #opensource conference is this coming Tuesday & Wednesday in the US.

:covid19: They are taking some but not all of the necessary #COVID19 precautions from #PHPledge so I will be attending the free-of-charge virtual option, which you may want to do as well.

The stream covers some event content via their proprietary SaaS provider. You do have to register so your (real or fake) personal data can be monetized by sponsors.

:opensource: ??♂️ Watching the opening keynote of the #OpenSource conference #AllThingsOpen, the organizers urged attendees to download the event's mobile app "from any app store".

Seems like they didn't bother to submit it to the only app store on my phone, @fdroidorg -- most likely because they produced a proprietary event app instead of using one of the many available #FreeSoftware options.
