:skull360: We've successfully upgraded our Mastodon server to v4.5.0-alpha.2+mementomods-2025-08-05 with some minor Mastodon software updates.

This upgrade includes the latest today's daily build, so everything should be as up to date as possible.

As always, if you notice anything unusual or buggy, please let me or any of the other admins know.

What do you think about emoji reactions on social media? I know some Fediverse clients support them. Mastodon has emoji reactions in announcements, which makes me wonder - would it really be a bad thing to have them in statuses as well? 🤔

It makes me sad that there are so many AI videos and audios of Ozzy Osbourne out there now. I don't care if he said the same things in an interview - creating and sharing artificial AI audio or video after someone's death just feels plain disrespectful unless they gave permission while alive. The worst part is you can't always tell the AI-generated ones from the real videos... that's where we're at now with the world.

When AI, machines, and automation take over completely, will we in the Fediverse be the last part of the human race refusing to accept it?

I'm often genuinely scared because I constantly hear people willingly sharing all their details with OpenAI and Meta. I just saw a long post where someone was thankful to ChatGPT for being their therapist. Why do so many think their private details are safe and even worse - that they can somehow control AI and algorithms, believing they're here to serve us and not the other way around? We're in deep trouble.

I always get a few nay-sayers sliding into my notifications, going on about "no interactions", "no traction", "not social", "no appeal" nonsense. How do you explain these comments and likes every other second then? You should follow more than 20 people here.

@monarchist Compeltely disagree. Did you read what I posted? Fediverse is the MOST lively social network I have ever used. Thousands of interactions every day.

Try following 7000 and you see the difference. It's NOT posting into the void.

Fediverse is still the most lively social network I have ever used, since MySpace in 2003. It is better than Twitter or any commercial social media platform ever was. Absolutely love being here.

The most profound thing about it is the international coverage. After the first wave of enshittification in 2010, algorithms took over, and suddenly as a polyglot I was labeled as Finnish. No more visible international posts, people only saw the Finnish ones.

I've noticed the same effect in commercial AI. It ignores the fact that I use English online 99% of the time and still replies to me in Finnish despite all instructions. Algorithms and AI label you. They assign you a language, a status, a certain type of person. There's no changing that.

The Fediverse and Mastodon are delightfully mine, yours, and truly open source - respecting privacy. Nobody's machine can tell you, "You are this, and this is why we do that."

Fuck labelers and the fog machines. Let me be me. Here, on my own server, I can embrace my weirdness and post however I want, how often I want, whenever I want, in whatever language I choose - without constantly worrying about how my identity will be perceived by a machine.

Yeah, Threads do not have permission control for quotes. You can quote anyone there.

@BeAware I remember reading extensively about this but can't find the ticket/PR right now.

I've already seen this implementation on beta servers or from Misskey. It shows your post and the quote under it, if no permission is given it just shows "the user approval pending" or something like that. I suppose in the final design the quote repost feature is not even available if you have no permission to quote.

I'm sure it won't be via link-only and it is not via link on Threads either (although that works too). In Threads UI you click "Repost" which reposts it directly (like it is now on Mastodon) and Quote which creates a new post with a quote.

So I guess it's like the hashtag feature is now, when you click a hashtag, you get options. Similar would work with repost-icon.

Quoting other people is not implemented yet, and it is currently not possible to mark your own posts as allowing quotes.
