Decades from now, if someone asks you what the 2020s were like, you can tell them that when one person asked another if they had a good holiday, the answer, “Yes, I did absolutely nothing” was not only socially acceptable but also completely understandable.

Checked in to our hotel in Italy and they gave me a card with instructions on how to connect to the hotel wifi.
The text on the card reads “spotty wi-fi.” Like, that’s the brand name of the service or provider. Either Italians have a dark sense of humor, or their English is not as good as they think it is.

Excellent quote I came across: "People do not seem to realize that their opinion of the world is also a confession of their character" - Ralph Waldo Emerson

"I'm sorry, I don't understand what you said, can you clarify?"
See how that works?
Yes, language is ambiguous, but when humans use it, it is also a two-way street, in which both parties are continuously tossing requests for information back and forth to remove the ambiguity and reach a common understanding.

Arguably the most important period in human history is from before humans were humans. 900,000 years ago, according to DNA research, our remote hominid ancestors lived on an incredibly hostile planet, and their numbers were reduced to 1280 breeding persons on the entire planet. This extreme bottleneck didn’t last a short while, but 117,000 years —a period unimaginably long to us modern humans. We don’t know where they lived. All we know is they must have been some tough motherfuckers.

@elaterite The big sign on the far right reads 佐久間盛政秀吉ヲ襲フ "Sakuma Morimasa attacks Hideyoshi." Sakuma Morimasa (1554-1583) was a samurai. Hideyoshi, full name Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1538-1598) was a samurai and daimyо̄, considered the Great Unifier of Japan. The red caption on the right reads 羽柴秀吉, Hashiba Hideyoshi, which was another name by which Hideyoshi was known. The caption above the horseman on the left reads 佐久間盛政, Sakuma Morimasa. I can't make out the writing at bottom left.

It's just my luck that after swearing off meat, I figure out how to make coq au vin properly (I renounced pescatarianism for the holidays, and for the company).

#Art #AsianArt I really don't know anything about the sculpture you see, although I'm fairly sure it's Indonesian. The big wardrobe or cupboard in the background is entirely inlaid with mother-of-pearl.

One of my first actions of the new year was to delete the Bluesky app from my phone. To quote Monty Python and the Holy Grail, “It is a silly place.”
