I’ll never forgive Trump for helping ruin my relationships with some members of my extended family. I can’t even talk to them normally anymore. The pain is acute at the holidays.

That “Trump Derangement Syndrome” is used to describe critics and not cultists has never sat right with me.

Yes, clearly I am the deranged one here. Your worship of Trump as an infallible god-king is perfectly normal. Forgive me.

Thank you for all the thoughtful responses to this question. I would add:

1. Republicans are voted out of power because they take it too far and folks in the middle finally get sick of it. Democrats get voted out because they are too timid to wield power effectively.

2. More people voted for Trump in 2020 than in 2016, and I would wager even more vote for him in 2024. People like what Trump and the GOP are selling because it’s immediate. Democrats touting slow systemic change isn’t visceral.

What can Democrats realistically do between now and next November from stopping the Trump dictatorship from beginning? It seems like we're all just sleepwalking towards a cliff right now...

I just listened to Jason Aldean's disgusting vigilante justice anthem "Try That In A Small Town." Here's the thing: I grew up in a small town (Mitchell, Indiana: population 4,000) and I've spent most of my adult life working in other small towns not much larger than that. So, it's very rich for me to hear Jason Aldean, who grew up in a large city (Macon, Georgia) and lives in another large city (Nashville, Tennessee), tell me how things really are in small town.

Trump on the proper treatment of arrested "thugs" during a July 2017 speech:

"You see these towns and when you see these thugs being thrown into the back of a paddy wagon — you just see them thrown in, rough — I said, please don’t be too nice. Like when you guys put somebody in the car and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put their hand over? Like, don’t hit their head and they’ve just killed somebody — don’t hit their head. I said, you can take the hand away, OK?"

Finally started reading this over the past few days. Excellent writing. The parallels between 1930s Germany and the right-wing takeover of American politics of today are uncanny. Scary.

I follow back everyone who follows me. I’m very sociable. If we follow each other and you disagree with something I say, I’m happy to have that conversation as long as it’s good-faith and respectful. But, I am not really interested in being yelled at by random strangers who’ve never followed or interacted with me before. That’s a real quick way to meet my mute and/or block button. Let’s leave the drive-by insults on the bird site, shall we?

As Trump contemplates returning to Twitter and Facebook, I am feeling very satisfied with my decision to turn my attention to Mastodon.
