Today's a National Day of Mourning in the United States. A day that honors the genocide of millions of Native Americans, the theft of their lands, and the destruction of their cultures. It's a reminder that this country's foundations are built on Indigenous dispossession and erasure. Learn more: http://www.uaine.org/#NationalDayOfMourning#Thanksgiving
@moshimotsu The primary diff isn't licensing but the answer to the question "why are we doing this?" If you read the stuff from RMS he started free software over ethics. The primary message is that proprietary software is unethical control over the user. The OSI rejects that and says at https://opensource.org/about that it's about "higher quality, better reliability, greater flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in." @moshimotsu That "free software" requires or implies copyleft is a common misconception. Copyleft is about *protecting* those freedoms by not letting people take them away - but that's a different matter. The definition for free software is at https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html and has no requirement for copyleft. Thus, any license that grants the 4 freedoms is free software license.
@serge@josh0 The compiler's output format is a separate issue from my musing about the language it's implemented in but okay: The compiler and assembler target the Z-machine and I don't know that I'd want to lose that - it's probably the most portable VM ever made, having been implemented on almost every architecture that's existed since the 1980s. There are even ones for both JavaScript and WASM.
I see that Zork 1, 2 & 3 are #FreeSoftware now - very cool. The original Infocom compiler & assembler (ZILCH and ZAP) aren't free, but there's a new compiler called ZILF and assembler called ZAP. The catch: it's written in C# which makes me think of patent problems. I'd really prefer a version in standard C or GNU C. #SoftwareFreedom
Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we honor and remember the trans lives lost to transphobic violence. Holding space in silence and solidarity. Tonight at 6:30pm, Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck will issue a proclamation in the Seattle Municipal Tower at 700 5th Ave, Room 3408, if you're able to attend. #TDOR#TransRightsAreHumanRights
The #cat finished eating breakfast, went into the living room, walked to the couch, put his face right up to it, and meowed into the fabric. Sir… are you trying to talk to the couch? Should I be worried who answers back? #CatsOfMastodon

On this day 35 years ago (Nov 12, 1990), Tim Berners-Lee published the formal proposal for the World Wide Web. But 8 years ago, on July 7, 2017, Tim Berners-Lee approved the Encrypted Media Extensions (EME) specification, bringing DRM into the web standard. #OnThisDay#DRM
On this day November 11 1982: Space Shuttle Columbia was launched from Kennedy Space Center, marking the first operational mission of the Space Shuttle program. The successful mission showed the world what the Space Shuttle fleet could accomplish and laid the groundwork for decades of human spaceflight achievements and helped usher in a new era of routine orbital missions, satellite deployment, and scientific experimentation. #SpaceHistory#NASA#SpaceShuttle#OnThisDay
The overhead PA on the city bus dings and the automated voice announces: "NE Campus Parkway and Brooklyn Avenue NE. University of Washington." It must be day 2 of #SeaGL. 🚍
