On this day, 20 years ago, November 9, 2004, Firefox 1.0 was released. It was supposed to be the champion of a free and open web, a browser with a mission. But somewhere along the way, it lost its way, making compromises that sidelined user freedom and it became "the the little browser that couldn't." https://jxself.org/little-browser.shtml#Firefox#FreeSoftware#SoftwareFreedom
@jxself I remember those day, even prior that, I was installing Phoenix on every computer at the "Internet Cafe" where I was working at that time since it was lighter than Netscape
@jxself It's really a mistake to think Mozilla ever really cared about firefox. They've tried to kill it off a few times now, for example in favour of the Mozilla Desktop Suite. They struck it lucky one time but don't understand why or care. I expect Mozilla will go the way of Yahoo and countless other "internet companies."
At that point it'll be the responsibility of others to salvage something. Now is a good time for everyone who needs to ship a browser to think about a new foundation.
