I saw someone say Elon Musk is worth $185 billion.
Which is absurd. Elon Musk HAS $185 billion in assets at the moment, maybe. But that’s not what he’s WORTH.
If something happened to Elon, we wouldn’t pay $185 billion to get another one.

Did you know that cacti can be a source of water in an emergency?
If you encounter someone who won't share their water, repeatedly hit them with a cactus until they give it to you.

I really admire the conviction of admins who are standing up to Threads. However, while I support those who say they will block any server that doesn’t block any server that doesn’t block any server that doesn’t block Threads, I think the ones who threaten to block any server that doesn’t block any server that doesn’t block any server that doesn’t block any server that doesn’t block Threads are going too far.

Capitalism isn’t a synonym for markets, freedom, progress, or the rule of law. Capitalism is the organization of society around the interests of capital, and for the generation of profits.
Economic freedom, fair competition, or things getting better over time are neither required by nor natural consequences of capitalism.
As long as capital grows, capital is happy. Your prosperity, to the extent you have any, is a by-product—and one that capital will ultimately see as waste, and come for.
I’m coming to love #Mastodon’s boost culture. Everybody’s all like, “Follow everyone! Boost it all!”
In the Blue Place, it felt like we were all competing for attention. Here, it’s more like we’re cooperating for attention.
At one level, that doesn’t make sense—everyone still has only so much attention to spend. But it *feels* better, and without The Algorithm enforcing power law, winner-take-all dynamics, the boost culture does seem to lift a lot of voices that were drowned out over there.
What do I do for a living? Like many of you, my primary occupation is entering passwords and two-factor codes into a variety of apps and websites all day long.
@baldur Indeed. There is also a strong parallel in the reasoning—open offices are bad for productivity, but they are great for casual employee surveillance of a type that is more challenging in remote work.
The best clue to the motive of “return to office” firms is: how are workstations arranged? Are most desks set up with monitors facing out, so workers can be approached from behind with what they are working on visible? That’s a company that cares about surveillance, not collaboration.
@ZeroCovidColin When a boss says, “It’s impossible to maintain company culture with remote work,” what I hear is, “I have no idea what company culture actually is or how to maintain it.”
JFC, #Fortnite, it's been a while since you pulled this $%!+.
DO NOT default me into a new game mode when you debut one. I do not care about "The Kid Laroi's Wild Dream." The trailer was cool, but I. Don't. Care. I only play Zero Build - Solo. Only.
It's not hard.
@adamconover I would prefer not only to not see the list of what I looked at last year, but in fact to pretend that nobody is able to see that.
