1. A color portrait of the American engineer John Wood, a genial man with silver hair and expressive eyebrows. He should have been famous. Except his last invention, something he called the Cosmic Cube, blinked himself out of existence, as if he had never lived. We’re lucky to have even this portrait of Wood, which was spared annihilation through happenstance. The image was stored on a CD-ROM that Wood’s patent lawyer—Anderson, of Anderson, Wake, & Howe—kept safe in a file cabinet in his office that appeared to be indifferent about the physical laws of reality.

1. A color illustration of a woolly mammoth, its ivory tusks improbably long. Mammoths died out about 4,000 years ago, but a VC-funded company called Colossal plans to reengineer the genes of the mammoth’s nearest living relative—the Asian elephant—in order to clone a “reboot” of the woolly mammoth. As one Colossal scientist put it, “We’re not bringing the mammoth back from extinction so much as de-extinctifying it.” Should Colossal find success in designing a cold-resistant elephant with same biological traits as a mammoth, the company plans to rewild the world with other CRISPR-created creatures. Saber-tooth tigers. The giant ground sloth. Dire wolves and aurochs. Patents pending.

1. A color illustration of a giraffe in a three-quarters profile. Samantha knows that in medieval bestiaries giraffes were imagined as a mix between camels and leopards, a Camelopardalis. In Jacob van Maerlant’s 14th century masterpiece, Der Naturen Bloeme, a giraffe is shown kneeling before a knight with a sword in one hand and a torch in the other. It is a questing beast and it has been found. It’s a lesson Samantha knows well. Wherever there is magic, men will track it down. They call it a quest, but it’s really a hunt.

1. A pinto colt, brown and yellow. Jack read that wild horses will drive out the young males—the colts—from the herd, and that the colts join up with other young exiled stallions to form what’s called a bachelor herd. The animal kingdom, Jack thinks. Not so different from New York City in 1979.

1. A detailed illustration of a yellowjacket, a type of predatory wasp found in North America. They build their nests underground, and woe to the human who disturbs them. Mark uncovered a nest one July day, and hundreds of yellowjackets poured out, buzzing like chainsaws. It must have looked like a slapstick routine, Mark running across a green lawn, swatting his body until it bruised, before he dove toward the hose and showered himself with water. He counted 17 stings and felt like he had the flu for 2 days. His arthritis cleared up for almost a year.
