A color illustration of a woolly mammoth, its ivory tusks improbably long. Mammoths died out about 4,000 years ago, but a VC-funded company called Colossal plans to reengineer the genes of the mammoth’s nearest living relative—the Asian elephant—in order to clone a “reboot” of the woolly mammoth. As one Colossal scientist put it, “We’re not bringing the mammoth back from extinction so much as de-extinctifying it.” Should Colossal find success in designing a cold-resistant elephant with same biological traits as a mammoth, the company plans to rewild the world with other CRISPR-created creatures. Saber-tooth tigers. The giant ground sloth. Dire wolves and aurochs. Patents pending.
