A color portrait of the American engineer John Wood, a genial man with silver hair and expressive eyebrows. He should have been famous. Except his last invention, something he called the Cosmic Cube, blinked himself out of existence, as if he had never lived. We’re lucky to have even this portrait of Wood, which was spared annihilation through happenstance. The image was stored on a CD-ROM that Wood’s patent lawyer—Anderson, of Anderson, Wake, & Howe—kept safe in a file cabinet in his office that appeared to be indifferent about the physical laws of reality.
