Gentoo portage is my favorite Sokoban puzzle game. Solve thrilling toolchain and library conflicts by removing and reinstalling them in the right order! Beware that certain wrong moves such as rage-deleting your last copy of GCC can hardlock a level.

Just brought an ancient Gentoo installation back to life, it does not have working a portage, Python, and even bash due to incompatibility. The solution is rebuilding a newer but binary-compatible bootstrapping userspace via Gentoo Prefix to jumpstart Python and bash, which then can jumpstart portage...

Trying to get a Gentoo Prefix running on a system with an old kernel and toolchain. It failed at liblzma and xz. Should I report it to the upstream or to Gentoo first... *Open xz bug tracker.* Ahhh? ...Oh, it doesn't matter, Gentoo maintainer thesamesam just stepped up as the new maintainer of xz. :blobcatlul:

@mei@donotsta.re The next time people claim Python is horribly inefficient due to developer's incompetence, just show them this example. Ask them what are their solutions for optimizing any code at all if Python allows such an extreme level of runtime introspection.

@whitequark@mastodon.social @mei@donotsta.re Yes. I meant in my original comment that, in Python and other introspected languages, my expectation is to be thankful if the interpreter can do any optimizations at all. When the runtime is subject to inspections and changes, nothing is trivial.
